Weight Of Days

By Faniyi Oluwatomiwa Elijah
Picture
Some days come with so much trouble
That all you can do is sit
Listen to the wind as it hums
Drink the wine of hope
Empty the pains of your thought
And sleep your sorrow away.

Some days arrive heavy and overweight
You'll wish you could register it at the local gym
With the hope that it might just work out
And get in shape and be able to
On its own walk out of your calendar
Without staining you with rancid memory.

In those days, I prefer to sit
At the foot of the rock
Where my apartment perched
Look into the eyes of the setting sun
Who, like a new bride was beginning to hide
Its radiant face behind the veil of clouds.

In a moment, I'm floating
Another moment, I'm soaring
This boy is never a setting sun
You'll spend the rest of your life
Counting his radiant rays
Wrong to say he's got a spark
Cos' he's fire, a blazing son.

I'm the persona in this poem. Most times, the world hauls its weight, the entire 202lbs, and hurls it on my poor, feeble shoulders.

Sometimes, I slouch on my rickety sofa, and cry because I feel I'm not Simon of Cyrene, I can't carry that heavy cross. But sometimes I feel like Rocky Balboa, when he defeats Apollo Creed, when he hears Mickey telling him 'No pain...'

Either way, I know I'm a Porsche with no breaks, and I'd definitely win every single life game. So why not get up and right to it? There's so much success to achieve.

This poem gives me hope, to keep fighting, to never give up, because, I'm a fire, a blazing inferno.

I love the flow of the poem. It resonates beautifully well. I also love the use of personification in the poem, that was able to birth to the in-depth beauty that resides in the poem. My area for improvement would definitely be on the use of grammars. I believe that if the grammars are strongly constructed and used, the beauty would be heightened.

I think the beauty of poetry is in the ability to paint vivid pictures on the canvas of one's mind with few words. Today came in overweight, urging me to share in its burden and I too sat staring at the sky, trying not to break down in tears in the Danfo while listening to calm songs.

One thing I find fascinating about humans is our resilience - how sailors sail their ships even when the wind is raging. The sun might be scorching, but not our hope. Especially in places like Nigeria where the government is falling repeatedly against us like dominos, asking us to bear the brunt of their weight without complaints.

This poem reminds me of depressing days I spent in bed wondering if my hard work will ever pay off and if I would ever get a job and stop depending on stipends. It doesn't mean bad days won't come, but it won't break me to the point where I'll accept defeat.

It also reminds me of the phoenix and as I type this, a scene from one of the Harry Potter series flashes in my head when the bird rose from its ashes.

This life is weird. You could be doing good all your life and still have bad things happen, but be good regardless. You will determine the course of life, not the other way. Some days, you'll win, some days you'll lose but every day, you'll try again and that's the beauty of living.

Some days, sometimes could be like that.
When one feels as though life has set us apart for a time filled with mystery.

There are days when all seems dry, with no ray of hope or a cloud for telling the beginning of a raining season.

But Just like Maya Angelou said"All my work, my life , everything I do is about survival not just bare ,awful, plodding survival but survival with grace and faith while one may encounter many defeat one must not be defeated.

This piece talks about the heavy blows life deals people and the different ways they make people feel and approach them.

It also discusses the glimmer of hope in people's eyes e, when they are finally able to conquer these heavy blows, having made an approach.

This is without having to waste away, only to become stronger and more independent.

I would've have loved this piece even better if the writer has used the punctuation marks rightly. I also loved the use of pun in the first and second lines of the second verse.

This, I must say, is a very nice piece!

A beautiful depiction of the ups and downs of life and the firm resolve that through both turns , one must hold on to the top , not giving in to down times , not giving up on bad Days.
The poet presents a relatable experience by the effective use of imagery, so much so that, reading the poem puts you in the poet's shoe .

I love the poem it shows that life is full mystery. Some days u might wake up feeling different and having your mind full with different thought and all u would want to do is take those feelings off your mind.

The poet is a witty and pensive young poet. His play on words gives the poem a slight humor and his perfect balance between humor and graveness is quite remarkable.
