IBADAN, MY HOME

Picture
Oh yes, even if I travel far and wide,
Down into the ocean,
And into the sky at large
But I will still call Ibadan my home.

One day I might have to leave,
To a new town for bread to fill my stomach,
Or to widen my coast,
Might someday go to London,
Or far away to the east,
But I will never stop calling Ibadan my home.
Might be out for a long time,
And things might hold me down in a strange land,
I believe I will break free
And come back to my home,
My beloved home, called the ancient city of Ibadan.

"Inspired by the song: I still call Australia home."

Nice poem here, Wareez. I really love the fluidity and simplicity of the poem. The poem, which carries a sense of belonging to a particular place, reads so easily. This simplicity of the poem does not reduce the quality of the poem. I love that. The first two words—oh yes—seem to be the commanding tone that drew my attention. Although beautiful, I think some punctuations were unnecessary, and in some cases, omitted. I also feel the 'But' in S1L4 drags the line a little bit. It could have been avoided.

The thematic preoccupation in the poem is so relatable &man's educative. Doesn't matter wherever we are or go, home is still our end place. Remembering home, regardless of whatever green pasture we seek and desire, is important. Nothing beats "break[ing] free/and com[ing] back home."

I remember writing about Ibadan when I took a bus from Ilorin to Ibadan, the rusty roots, the buzzing sound of their car horns, their lack of patience just like Lagos.
omo Hamed, this is really a nice piece that is well related to.
Thank you.
hoping to see more of your piece here.

Ibadan, My Home! It's the simplicity of language for me. Kudos!

However, deep down, I want to feel your home. I want to know why you will always want to return, even if you travel far and near. What's so unique and outstanding about Ibadan? I want to feel that! Nonetheless, it's a good attempt which can be better.

Indeed no place like home. Well done Hamed your poem is clear and precise. Even when we can run to Rome we can't forget Home.

Ibadan!!!! This poem brings smiles to my face. Lived in Ibadan for a year and it was a roller coaster experience. Loved the fact that your poem truly expressed your love for Ibadan, but I wished you had told us specific reasons why you really like Ibadan. This poem summarises the love a man has for his home (where he has probably spent his formative years).
Maybe I should try writing my poem- Nigeria, my home. I really want to japa though😂😂
Loved your poem Hamed.
P.S- We attend the same Uni.

No place like home.

Wherever we turn to, wherever we might have been, nothing beats the home atmosphere.

I love the poem. It drives the sense of appreciating the fact that home is the best come what may.

I enjoyed reading this poem because it tells the story of what home can mean to a person. I will love add this Home is a place where the heart longs for a warm embrace within the walls of shelter and comfort.

This is a beautiful and simple piece. I felt so nostalgic reading it. There truly can never be a place like home and I’m glad that this poem reminded me of that. Home will always be a safe space, a place of truly living and not just existing and it doesn’t matter if I have to leave home for things that are important, there’ll always be a piece of home in my heart.

Thank you for sharing, well done!
